Homelessness and food insecurity are rarely caused by a single challenge, which is why they are rarely overcome through a single service.

At Montclair Emergency Services for Hope (MESH), we meet individuals where they are, providing a continuum of care that addresses immediate needs while helping remove the barriers that stand between crisis and lasting stability. Founded in 2007 following the tragic death of a man who froze to death on a nearby park bench, MESH began as the area's first overnight winter respite shelter. Nearly two decades later, that same commitment has grown into a comprehensive continuum of care serving more than 1,100 unique individuals annually through overnight winter shelter, nutritious meals, clothing distribution, laundry services, employment assistance, addiction recovery support, and sober living placement.

What distinguishes MESH is not simply the breadth of our services, but the philosophy that guides them. Before MESH meets needs, it meets people. Every individual arrives with a different story, different challenges, and different opportunities for success. Rather than asking which program someone fits into, we ask a different question: What barrier is preventing this person from moving forward? The answer to that question shapes the support we provide.
